Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat’s editing tools is a must. About the role

The Assistant Managing Editor (AME) will support the Managing Editor weekly by helping oversee Collective Ink’s daily editorial operations, namely, by helping: manage editorial and publication schedules; assign manuscripts and titles to design staff, copyeditors, and proofreaders; review content for quality and integrity; coordinate and track titles in editorial production to ensure timely publication of high-quality, consistent books. Besides these editorial and administrative tasks, you will act as a key liaison helping to ensure the smooth transfer of files and other editorial assets between authors, editors, and designers, as well as other departments such as printing, marketing and distribution, and marketing and publicity.

Key Responsibilities

Editorial Management Assistance:

  • Process incoming manuscripts (e.g., register incoming titles with the Library of Congress; assign incoming titles to their copyeditor–proofreader, etc) and help track them across their various stages of editorial production (e.g., copyediting, typesetting, etc).
  • Help the Managing Editor organize and maintain editorial databases and metadata.
  • Facilitate Editorial & Production’s Cover Brief process.
  • Copyedit and proofread back cover copy and cover proofs for clarity, concision, and style.

Production & Operations:

  • Help the Managing Editor organize and maintain monthly publication schedules, deadlines, and workflows for various imprints.
  • Coordinate with printing, marketing, and sales teams as needed.
  • Assist the Managing Editor with administrative tasks such as generating reports and organizing schedules.

Communication Support:

  • Monitor and moderate the Ebook and Cover sections on the Editorial & Production Author Forum.
  • Act as Managing Editor by proxy when the Managing Editor is away on holiday or sick leave.
  • Communicate with and across printing, marketing, and sales teams as needed.

Essential Skills & Qualifications:

  • Excellent organizational and communication abilities
  • Strong editing, writing, and proofreading skills
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style
  • Strong familiarity with Adobe software, especially its PDF reader, Adobe Acrobat, and its editing tools
  • Ability to work under many deadlines while managing multiple priorities
  • Familiarity with print publishing
  • Experience in an editorial role, showing adaptability and attention to variable details

Job Type: Full-time
Contract length: 12 months

Pay: R15 000,00 – R25 000,00 per month
